Simon is the older of the two and is a literary scholar. The Cottons, a rich American family, inherit the property. He’s in love with Cassandra but she doesn’t love him back. Stephen is the maid’s son and has been living with them since his mother died. She wants to be an author and wants to “capture” the castle. Cassandra is the narrator and the middle child. Thomas is the youngest brother who is quite intelligent (same as Cassandra). Rose is the oldest daughter, beautiful and in want of a Jane Austen-esque romance. After the death of his first wife, he remarried Topaz, a model. Cassandra’s father is an author but he hasn’t written anything good since Jacob Wrestling. The Mortmain family is poor but they live in a castle which they have on rent for thirty years. When the Cotton brothers arrive from the States, love suddenly comes barging into the room. Seventeen-year-old Cassandra keeps a journal recording all that happens on Scoatney Hall (the castle’s name, I think).
